Our Philosophy |
|
We take the commitment to breeding basenjis very seriously. To that end, we believe that we are responsible for each puppy that we produce for his/her lifetime. We would like to think that the purchase of a Signet basenji is the beginning of a long and fulfilling relationship and hope that each buyer will stay in contact with us on at least a yearly basis. We remain available at any time of the day or night to assist you with any problems you should encounter. Do not hesitate to call us. We are committed to breeding a top quality basenji puppy that is healthy in mind and body. We carefully select the parents of each breeding by studying pedigrees, health history and temperament. Each breeding is decided with the ideal of producing top show quality basenjis, although we do not require that each of the puppies fulfill that destiny. All puppies are handled thoroughly, examined physically and table trained/stacked multiple times daily from the age of three weeks. We check teeth, open little mouths, handle feet and trim nails. Collars are issued at 4 weeks to facilitate easy lead training. The puppies are raised in the center of our home (our kitchen) underfoot with plenty of activity surrounding them. Our children are active in the socialization process of our puppies from the second week of birth to the age of 10 weeks when we release the puppies into their new homes. We believe that health testing is the only true measure of the genetic soundness of purebred dogs. Our dogs are x-rayed at the minimum age of 2 years and sent to the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals for a clinical evaluation. Our breeding stock is evaluated by a board certified animal ophthalmologist in the year preceding the anticipated mating. We also strip test for Fanconi Syndrome with glucose strips on a monthly basis after the age of 3 years. Only stock that has been evaluated and found to be of passing grade is considered in our breeding program. The results of such testing will be given to the buyer. The basenji thrives on discipline and will welcome a structured environment. Your commitment to provide clear boundaries during his first years of life, and taking the proper steps to ensure your basenji understands the rules will be well rewarded. A basenji is not suited for every person. Peculiar traits and habits, stubbornness and individuality make this unique dog a challenge for most families. Age-old instincts are strongly imbedded in this breed and caution must be used at all times to keep your basenji contained in your yard, or securely leashed while walking. Sadly, a loose basenji is usually a dead basenji. We invite you to carefully study the basenji standard and educate yourself about the individual traits of this unique breed. We encourage you to talk to a variety of breeders and to select a breeder that bests suits your personality. This is a relationship that should stand the test of time.
